Xylitol is a natural sweetener extracted from birch bark. It has a low glycaemic index and a lower energy content than ordinary sugar. It is ideal for people with diabetes and anyone who wants to sweeten their life in a healthy way!
In the human body, xylitol is a common component of metabolic processes. It is also commonly found in small quantities in nature. Some of the best sources include fruit (raspberries, plums, strawberries), wild berries, mushrooms, lettuce, sweetcorn cobs and oats. One cup of raspberries contains approximately 1 g of xylitol.
Xylitol is suitable for diabetics and has about 40 per cent fewer calories than refined white sugar. It has a very low glycaemic index and is metabolised by the body without insulin.
